Slow Down and Appreciate Life

Slow Down and Appreciate Life

It is hard, sometimes, to really slow down and appreciate life – at least, I find it hard, occasionally.

But when I find myself in the “fight-or-flight” mode, or otherwise stressed, I have found that it is worth the effort to slow down. When I make a conscious effort to do this, I appreciate the world around me and the work I am doing much more fully. And slowing down also reminds me to be grateful for the life I have, which enhances my work as well as my home and family life.

I believe we should all be masters of our minds – and play the movie in our heads that we want to see, not just the images and scenes that pop up automatically.

I consider that we are – or ought to be – the directors of our own stories. I believe we ought to be able to control what – and how – we think.

I know that I sometimes see things, not as they are, but as I – reflexively – imagine them to be.

For example, when I spill a little coffee on my desk, sometimes my immediate reaction is, “This is a disaster!” when in fact, it is merely a minor inconvenience. In these situations, I have to remind myself to stop for a second, and rethink my emotional reaction, so that I can align it appropriately to the actual circumstances at hand.

How do you gain control over your mind and reactions in stressful situations?

Until next Wednesday –

Peace,

Eric
