I am no longer a tennis player, although when I was younger I played some, in middle school and high school. A good friend from Atlanta, however, played college tennis, and we talk and text regularly, on tennis among many other topics of interest. I got interested in Wimbledon this year as he reported on various early matches.

So, I ended up rising early to watch the Wimbledon 2019 Men’s Singles Final. The finalists were Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, which promised to be an exciting match. And it delivered – the match went 5 sets, and in the final set 24 games were played, plus a tie-breaker, before a winner emerged.

There were several times at which either Federer or Djokovic was down. At one point during the final set, Federer was within a single point of winning the match, yet Djokovic battled back.

Ultimately, it was Djokovic who prevailed, winning the Wimbledon Men’s Singles title for the 5th time. Djokovic is the first man to win Wimbledon after being down match point since 1948.

Afterward, Djokovic said, “This match I’ll remember forever,” and noted he’d felt he was playing defense most of the match.

But – and this is my point – he never gave up. He never gave up. He fought and fought, and eventually, he won.

It was Winston Churchill who said, “Never give in, never, never, never-never, in nothing, great or small, large or petty – never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense.”

When was the last time you were in a difficult situation, facing tough odds, and you pushed to the finish? Did it not give you a glow of satisfaction, to battle through?
